The 29th of November 2007. Athens, Greece. "An" Club…
The place is not exactly packed with people, yet the ones who made it to the venue this fine chilly evening are more than just enthusiastic. The DJ keeps playing stuff from the "Victory Songs" album of ENSIFERUM as more people keep coming in…Party atmosphere all over the place and the people of "Loud Sound" promotion storming in every now and then to check up on things. Things look absolutely peachy…
INSIDEAD are the first band that is going to hit the stage tonight and they'll soon be happy to find out that a great deal of their own fans are within this crowd…An excellent stage show from INSIDEAD tonight, as they demonstrate some well performed groovy progressive death metal with a healthy dosage of melody in their sound. I had seen these guys giving a show a number of times before so I knew what to expect more or less: a brick-solid rhythm section and some brilliant guitar riffology that make INSIDEAD a memorable act. The all time classic cover performance of Metallica's "Blackened" leaves
the crowd headbanging like hell and yelling for more!
ENSIFERUM walked the stage of "An" club during the epic sounds of the excellent "Ad Victoriam", that flawlessly worked as an intro to the whole event, wearing nothing but kilts bearing the colors of Finland! "Blood Is The Price Of Glory" and the Finnish quintet instantly earns the Athenian audience. The sound seems a little muffled at first but the
whole problem is resolved within a few seconds…
Petri Lindroos is a great performer and an excellent vocalist. Markus Toivonen, the ENSIFERUM mastermind, stands besides him and his melodic vocal parts seem to constantly provoke the crowd to sing along. The outcome is a heavy battle tone in the air that pushes the morale of the band even further. Awesome feeling! Bass guitar player Sami Hinkka seems to have gone berserk and ENSIFERUM are the absolute rulers of the venue. Punch lines such as "I'm going to teach you a Finnish word now…" (followed by the crowd screaming "Ahti") and "I think that this is the time for the drinking song now…"
(right before "One More Magic Potion") are just some of the highlights of the evening! Sarcastic lines such as "Can you be louder than Manowar?" ("yeeeeaaah"), "Can you be louder than Turkey?" (yeeeeeeeaaaaah!!!) would frequently add a pinch of salt to the show…The band performed material from all three albums and managed to cover the latest "Victory Songs" album completely (they even played the ten
minute long "Victory Song", which left the audience ecstatic)!
The night ended with the band and audience completely exhausted but utterly satisfied. ENSIFERUM would have surely played a third encore if
they hadn't exhausted their play list (and themselves) entirely. An amazing performance by an amazing band!
Afterwords ENSIFERUM joined METAL INVADER's party in club Texas, were we all had a great fucking heavy metal gathering!!!
