In Vain - The Latter Rain

(Indie Recordings) Total Time: 64:58

IN VAIN were formed back in 2003 by three enthusiastic musicians who wanted to serve the music they love. They released two self-financed EPs and fuelled by the standing ovations and the great response from the majority of media, the band came back to studio in order to record their first full length album called “The Latter Rain” during the 2007. Wanted by someone to set a label on their music the only thing that I can say is “progressive black-death metal”.

“The Latter Rain” is a musically complex album while a variety of musicians and instruments were used in this effort to become true. To be more precise, “The Latter Rain” was created by six full time members guided by Johnar Haaland (all songs are written and composed by him) and fourteen guest musicians including Jan K. Transeth (In The Woods) and Kjetil Nordhus (Green Carnation, Trail Of Tears). Referring to the musical instruments, piano, flute, viola, violin, trumpet, trombone, saxophone, lap steel, Hammond and church organ and even orchestral percussion all of them recorded and mixed at DUB Studios (Green Carnation, Blood Red Throne, Chain Collector) made this diamond I was lucky to have in my albums’ collection!

Now I’ll talk about the structure of the album. There is one thing that should be left in your minds: At some points during the album you are trapped in a whirlwind of a black metal’s attack and before you know it and all of a sudden, calm music, clean vocals and sorrowful atmosphere come to save you and put out the fires burning inside your ears. Furthermore, IN VAIN’s compositions are challenging upon every listen while you discover different layers of feelings, images and truly inspired segments of all kinds of music.

In their official homepage IN VAIN are self described like this:

“The highly anticipated full length debut from Norwegian newcomers In Vain, offers a vastly creative addition to the extreme metal canon which will erase their unknown status for good.”

I feel that I have to admit this statement and say no more words about them! These guys made a huge impact on 2007 year’s metal scene and the future is wide open for them!
