The Lamp Of Thoth - Cauldron Of Witchery

(Eyes Like Snow/Northern Silence) Total Time: 24:39

From Keighley, UK the three piece Doom Metal act called The Lamp Of Thoth has a new release in their catalog which is no other than the Cauldron Of Witchery Mini CD which is out by Eyes Like Snow / Northern Silence. Cauldron Of Witchery was released in summer 2007 as a 10’’ vinyl EP by The Miskatonic Foundations and it was actually the band’s first official release after their 2006 I Love The Lamp Demo CD-r.

For those who have missed the 10’’ EP or have not got a turntable this is their big chance to enjoy the Pure Doom Metal of this band delivered on CD. The CD edition includes two bonus live recordings that represent the bands heaviness on stage but first we should refer to the studio stuff included in here. The first song is called The Lamp Of Thoth and for those that have heard the demo of the band it would be a familiar tune. A slow to mid tempo melodic and mysterious song with a light NWOBHM touch. It starts with a magnificent dark theme enforced by a great lead guitar melody, it soon becomes faster taking the listener back in the mood of all those dark-side NWOBHM bands of the early 80s. You will soon bang your head on it.

Sunshine is the second track of the Mini CD it is even darker, heavier and slower haunted by a strange apocalyptic touch in the melodies. I would point it as the best composition in here but I would better hold my horses cause there is something more in here… Of course I am referring to the great cover they have done on the classic Cirith Ungol’s Frost And Fire. Fuck this probably one of the best covers I have ever heard. They have totally transformed the track into a mysterious Epic Doom Metal anthem representing it under a unique apocalyptic and dark atmosphere. This is bewitched Steel!

As far as the two live recordings included (Blood On Satan’s Claw, Into The Lair Of The Gorgon) I cannot say that they managed to satisfy me that much. As I wrote before someone can realize the heaviness and the energy of the band by listening them but as compositions they did not manage to reach my peak. The band could probably have selected some other tunes, for sure they got some better songs to present –for example Pagan daze form their debut demo-. Anyway I liked Into The Gorgon’s Lair much more than Blood On Satan’s Claw which was also included in the demo and I remember myself skipping it all of the time.

Anyway Lamp Of Thoth have proved to what are they capable of delivering some inspired Pure Doom Metal inspired by the dark side of Black Sabbath and enforced by the spirit of the sinister NWOBHM bands. They would better stick into their own mysterious, heavy and slow style and leave the punk oriented Blood On Satan’s Claw-like songs behind. I hope that we have not to wait that long for their debut until then move on and buy this CD. If you are not into Doom Metal but you are still worshipping Cirith Ungol you should at least hear that cover!
