Promises - In The Pharmacy

(Metal Breath) Total Time: 38:55

PROMISES come from Czech Republic. They were initiated in 1996 and after several demos and a full length album (“Flight To Fall”, 2000) they released this album that seems to be their breakthrough.
On the promo sheet they claim to play doom metal, but either I am completely wrong on the definition or they haven’t characterized their music properly. “In The Pharmacy” you can find (besides aspirins) simple songs with the maximum of 4-minute length, clean vocals and an approach to music that balances between alternative and metal. That’s not exactly doom the doom way, is it? Well, definitions were never the problem as what matter is music only. PROMISES show some technical skills, emotional playing and a metal background in a - let me put it nicely – more civilised playing than straightforward metal bands. They may continue in this halfi-metal, half-alternative way, but they have also some obvious paths they can take. If they put electronic elements they will sound like metal Placebo, if they put a little bit of gothic they will be the Eastern HIM, if they speed up and make their sound heavier they will be more of classical heavy metal. Right now, their mellow playing shows signs of quality and deserves a chance from those who like this kind of music. It’s better to speak things with their name so that anyone can make their choice.
