“Fractal Possession” is the first album of the Austrian black metallers since their reunion in 2006, which is considered to be one of the quietest reunions in metal.
The band in this album follows the path of intelligent black metal (alternative title electro/industrial black metal), without giving up the original ABIGOR musical elements. The electro/industrial samples can be found in most of the songs and the production is also made in the appropriate way to fit in the whole style.
The album consists of 10 tracks and you can listen to some great compositions like “Project: Shadow” and “Liberty Rises a Diagonal Flame”. The guitar riffs are solid and impressive, mainly aggressive but with melodic passes that can be noticed in some parts and of course the spasmodic/ harmonic squeals guitar pattern that is used a lot in this kind of music, could not be missing. In my opinion that pattern sounds really annoying sometimes. The drumming of Thomas Tannenberger is raw and fierce, using great dynamics on the snare drum, especially while blast beating. His way of playing and his ideas contribute to the album’s music so it can achieve the permissible outcome, which provides the black metal aesthetics to the max.
Unfortunately, there is a “but” in the whole story. Despite all the things mentioned above “Fractal Possession” is a tiring album that leaves you with the feeling of being unfilled and it gives the impression that it could sound better. It is believed that it will divide the listener’s of ABIGOR’ s music. Maybe the next album will be more carefully created, avoiding the mistakes of this one.
