PERSEFONE come to us from a rather quiet spot in the world, Andorra. The band was formed in 2001 and like all new bands started taking the stages playing covers of bands like IN FLAMES, DARK TRANQUILITY and ARCH ENEMY. As soon as the four members of PERSEFONE felt like they could stand on their own feet, they started working on their own material creating their very first song, Niflheim (The eyes that hold the edge) and orientating themselves towards their personal music destination that was most about melody, aggressiveness and rhythmical complexity. Later, this song was joined by six more tracks and became a demo which later, in turn, became the band’s first LP, “Truth inside the shades” that was released in 2004.
So, two years later and after some changes in the line-up, we have the band’s next work, “Core”. The first thing that strikes the eye is that although the duration of the album is over an hour, there are only three tracks, even though they are subdivided to a galore of “subtracks”. “Core” is a concept album about the Greek goddess Persephone of the underworld, that “lend” her name to the band itself. The album was produced at Orion Studios, as it was done with their previous one, and it was mastered by Peter in de Betou, famous for his work.
Labeling the music of PERSEFONE is quite a task since it is characterized by its diversity. We cannot label this band as just another death metal group. “Core” is enriched with a variety of sounds, although the style of progressive prevails. There are moments of classical piano followed by metal grunts, fast and aggressive guitar parts that interchange with semi-acoustic ones, there are also female vocal parts as well as some narration. Definitely, “Core” is an album full of emotions and musical colors, a characteristic that although it is an asset of the band, it also creates the need for extra listening, so one can be enraptured in the album’s magic
