Machinery - Degeneration

(Last Entertainment) Total Time: 46:10

MACHINERY is a band that blends thrash and death with vocals that vary from deep and heavy that bring in mind Blaze Bayley or Chris Boltendahl to more deathlike growls. It`s a weird combination but that just gives an originality that other bands of their style lack. From the first seconds you can realize that their name reflects their music: synchronised pounding of all instruments like coordinated machines in a factory line. The production helps them in that and their sound is unbreakable, especially the guitars. There are no pauses, just riffs and mostly double bass drumming even when they turn more melodic which they often do. The two guitars cooperate perfectly and present a twin attack of staccato based riffs like in Rectifirer.
What made me a little bit reluctant with this cd is the voice that apart from its uniqueness it doesn`t always fit. The singer does a good job and his voice is flexible, but I am not so sure he uses the right way to perform every time. There are also a few parts like in Unholy Demon when the whole band sounds like Nevermore and that is cool, but you don`t go far with that If you have it as a permanent reference, something that this band doesn`t and that`s for its best.
MACHINERY advance in general with their own sound without copying or following other bands and their songs have a sense of melody that balances with their thrash/death attitude. They keep a mid-pace tempo, but they are still a good reason to move your head with their grooves and riffs. They have all the potentials to do something better and be recognised by a larger audience.
