Dutch band EPICA is the child of Mark Jansen (known from his previous band AFTER FOREVER) who is surrounded by ex - CASSIOPEIA members Ad Sluijter (guitar) and Jeroen Simons (drums) and by bassist Yves Huts (ex – AXAMENTA). The line up also features young classically trained opera singer Simone Simons and keyboardist Coen Jansen. EPICA are taken up the challenge to create music of a ‘higher’ value that is build upon the combination of what is understood as ‘classical music’ and heavy metal in general. A challenge that quite a few bands took in the near past with THERION still assuming the leading role to this particular style of metal. EPICA appear to be influenced by THERION (even at a subconscious level) something that is noticeable in two ways: First of all the music, which brings in mind works like “Vovin” and “Deggial” at certain times, and secondly the fascination with “exotic” cultures especially from the Arab and the South American worlds. I should not be misunderstood here. EPICA are not copying from THERION. Both have their own subject matter and are incorporating the ‘classical’ element in their own appropriate ways. The comparison is being made to highlight the fact that both bands are carrying some common values and that both are heading towards the same magical horizon. THERION, of course, are much steps further. Even so, ‘The Phantom Agony’ is on the right track. This is what symphonic metal is all about. The power, the glory and the attitude of heavy metal that is married with the transcending energy and supremacy of orchestral classical music. Three violins, two violas, two cellos, a contrabass and a choir joined by the fascinating play of the standard instruments are painting majestic pictures of immortal music. The crystal clear production intensifies to the maximum the general outcome while the occasional death metal vocals add to a certain degree but seem somehow ‘foreigner’ to the whole work. A very ambitious effort from a band with tons of potential. www.epica.nl
