(Relapse) Total Time: 40:04
With the year kicking off with such releases, I have no reasons not to be happy and enthusiastic. These Canadians fellas came from nowhere and unexpected, as despite “Chronoclast” being their third full length BURIED INSIDE was totally unknown to me.
The first impression I got of this CD was very striking, so I immediately I press the “play” button again, without a second thought. I was trapped, the second time was much better than the first one. To be honest I left the CD unplayed for the following couple of days, in propose. I was very curious to see if a few days later BURIED INSIDE would make me feel the same way, if they were capable to blow me away again. I assure you that they not only have this capacity, but they even reinforced my enthusiasm and from that time onwards the CD was visiting my stereo almost every day. “Chronoclast” is an excellent piece of work, addictive, unleashing power and emotions. Every song of the album has its own personality and at the same time, one is the continuity of the other. Don’t make the mistake to listen BURIED INSIDE in parts, you’ll miss the whole point. “Chronoclast” work better as a unit.
NEUROSIS and BURST are the two bands that you can find enough similarities to the sound of these Canadians. Everything in this album sounded so fucking heavy, the riffs, the melodies, even the atmospheric parts. And that’s an ability that only bands like Neurosis and Isis have. And, this heavy, inner - melancholic sometimes – feeling that arises with magnificent and full of energy metalcore breakdowns, is just like Burst did in the superb “Prey of life” album. Finally elements from KNUT and CONVERGE complete the canvas of their influences. A further plus is the production of Matt Bayles, this guy slowly becomes the guru of today’s music scene. Awesome job. I want to mention that behind the excellent music there is a very interesting lyrical theme that deal with the concept of time, in all forms. As an ideology, as a religion, as a resistance etc. Unfortunately the promo copy has no lyrics so I have no more to say about that, just waiting the proper copy (I am looking forward for my order!) for a more complete view on the concept.
It’s your turn my friends to discover (at least) or even love another diamond of the modern extreme music: BURIED INSIDE. As the subtitle of “Chronoclast” says, the album consists of Selected Essays On Time-Reckoning And Auto-Cannibalism. As you wish, reading it as a book or listening to it as an album, the strange addiction with BURIED INSIDE just begun.
